Lent Walk to Ghana

Our Lent challenge this year is walking, cycling, rowing, running with a combined total of miles to make the over-4000-miles from Pudsey to our Mission Partner’s base in Accra, the capital of Ghana!

We’ll need you to send your updates to us by each Friday lunchtime so that we can give an update in the weekly online service as to where we’ve reached – you can report your distance travelled here. Remember that if you’re walking with a friend or other members of your household, you can record the mileage per person (so a 3 mile walk with 2 of you will count for 6 miles).

We also want you to raise money for our Mission Partners IJM and Tearfund – you can do this by a donation or by getting sponsored. We’re hoping to raise £1000 to be split between the two charities, to bring hope and a future in this difficult year. Donations can be made through the link www.pudseyparish.org.uk/walk-to-ghana where Gift Aid can also be added for anyone who pays tax – and you can give that link to anyone who is wanting to sponsor you too.

You can also donate by sending a bank transfer to church (just remember to use the reference “Lent Walk” to make sure it is added into the total – and donations of cash or cheques can be brought into church Monday to Friday mornings 10-12 to be donated too – please just make sure they’re in an envelope marked “Lent Challenge”. You can collect donations from friends and bring them into church (or contact the office to arrange for them to be collected) – or they can donate on the link above online.

There are at least 40 people taking part – so do find out and encourage one another to keep going! We’ll be posting weekly updates on our Facebook page and at the bottom of this page too so you can keep up with where we’ve reached so far – happy walking!!

It’s never too late to join us, if you want to get involved, please sign up here.

Start - Pudsey Parish Church

Week 1 - Pudsey to Caen, France

We have walked 363 miles so far!

What a fantastic start to our walk - on a short week of only 2 days we've already left the UK!

We have travelled from Pudsey to Caen, France.

Caen is in Normandy in the north of France, it's a city with a population of around 110,000 and is around 120 miles north west of Paris. It's the burial location of William the Conqueror and boasts a castle and 2 abbeys, along with a popular theme park just outside the city.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in pictures of their walks this week.

If you take any pictures while you're out and about this week, send them to Louise D to be included - we'd love to see what you've been up to!

Week 2 - Caen, France to Oran, Algeria

We walked 978 miles this week, for a total of 1419 miles walked so far!

Amazing progress this week, we started at the north of France and this week have travelled all the way through France and Spain and have left Europe already!

We have travelled from Caen, France to Oran, Algeria.

Oran is in Algeria, at the very northern end of Africa. Oran means 'Lion' and it has a population of over 600,000 people. The climate is much warmer than Pudsey, with an average of only 13 inches of rain a year, and an average temperature of 32 degrees in the summer and 17 in the winter.

Algeria is a very large country, with almost ten times the surface area of the United Kingdom, but hopefully next week we will have left Algeria and moved further south into Africa.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in pictures of their walks this week.

If you take any pictures while you're out and about this week, send them to Louise D to be included - we'd love to see what you've been up to!

Week 3 - Oran, Algeria to the Algeria/Mali border

We walked 954 miles this week, for a total of 2632 miles walked so far!

Amazing progress this week, we have covered the entire country of Algeria, crossing the Sahara desert!

We have travelled from Oran, Algeria to the border of Algeria and Mali.

Algeria is the 10th largest country in the world with a population of more than 44 million people. The country is dominated by the sahara desert which makes it very vulnerable to climate change, and because of this most of the population lives in the northern areas by the coast.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in pictures of their walks this week.

If you take any pictures while you're out and about this week, send them to Louise D to be included - we'd love to see what you've been up to!

Week 4 - Algeria/Mali border to Accra, Ghana!

We walked 1042 miles this week, for a total of 4110 miles walked so far!

You know what that means...

We have made it to Accra, Ghana!!

We are 3 weeks ahead of schedule, so next week we are going to walk around Lake Volta (the world's largest man made lake) and learn more about the work that IJM are doing there.

Accra has a population of just over 5 million people and an average temperature of between 26 and 29 degrees!

The reason we choose Accra as our walking destination is because IJM (one of our mission partners, who we are fundraising for) has a field office in Ghana, which Richard visited in autumn 2018.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in pictures of their walks this week.

Week 5 - Lake Volta

We walked 985 miles this week, for a total of 5144 miles walked so far!

We are walking around Lake Volta

As we arrived in Ghana 3 weeks ahead of schedule, we are now walking around Lake Volta.

It is the largest man-made lake in the world, constructed between 1961 and 1965., It has a shoreline of 2,980 miles and the same surface area as the whole of North Yorkshire!

Lake Volta is so big it can even be seen from space!

Week 6 - Lake Volta

We walked 915 miles this week, for a total of 6081 miles walked so far!

We are walking around Lake Volta

As we arrived in Ghana 3 weeks ahead of schedule, we are now walking around Lake Volta.

It's average depth is 18.8m (62 feet), but it gets much deeper and it's max depth is 75m (246 feet).

The Akosombo Dam on Lake Volta provides a substantial amount of Ghana’s energy and cost £130 million to construct.
